In the summer of 2003, The Beauregards threw in the towel; singer Ian Mulrenin
moved to Asheville, NC for school, while guitarist Hunter Simpson and
drummer Javier Perez-Albert stayed in Chapel Hill and
bassist Stuart Bell began his senior year of high school. Over the summer,
Hunter began writing songs and tracking demos on his bedroom four track recorder that would later
become the bulk of the early Participation Award repertoire. After hearing the
songs, Stuart and Javier joined Hunter on guitar and drums,
respectively. The group continued to write songs and played local shows
throughout 2003-2004 and eventually recorded with Ari Picker (The Never, Lost in the Trees)
at his home studio in Pittsboro, North Carolina.
The product was a collection of unusual indie-pop songs driven by Simpson and
Bell’s intertwining guitars and double vocals and anchored by Perez-Albert's
tight and locked percussion. The band's dynamic is a precipitate a familiar comfort: the accord of
being past band mates. The record is dynamic itself, with songs as varied as
introspective looks at suburban boredom, beautiful and vulnerable laments, and ridiculous tales
of the life of a crocodile shark.
