NEW SONG FROM THE NEVER!

Our friends at Terpsikhore Records just released a wonderful compilation highlighting some of the best bands from the Triangle area of North Carolina, and The Never were lucky enough to be a part of the album. The Never's song, "Littlest Things" is exiting new territory for the trio, and its already received some kind words from the press:

"With its meticulous harmonies and layers, The Never's arch "Littlest Things" suggests Grizzly Bear striving for the stars."
-The Independent

"The delicate piano ballad “Littlest Things” is a pristine replica of the Beach Boys’ late emo phase via Chapel Hill’s The Never."
-The Daily Tar Heel

OK, enough talk...time to listen! Check out the TRK Mix Tape to hear the song right now!

THE PHYSICS OF MEANING COVER THE SMITHS

The folks over at The Music Slut have curated a wonderful tribute to Morrissey (and those other dudes in The Smiths) and are revealing it for free download, day by day all month. They were kind enough to ask our own The Physics of Meaning to contribute a cover and destiny has finally been revealed! Daniel Hart chose "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" from The Smiths' classic The Queen Is Dead album, transforming it from a dancey lament to a baroque soliloquy. The compilation also features songs from our dear friends Pattern is Movement and Deleted Scenes so stay tuned to The Music Slut for those tracks.

THE OWL ROOM COMPILATION VOLUME ONE

Members of the Trekky Records Collective created The Owl Room Recording Cooperative in the Summer of 2008, trying to apply a classic, membership based coop system to a recording studio. Since then, The Owl Room has become a homebase for recording demos, full albums and live sessions.

Here we present The Owl Room Compilation Volume One, an assortment of tracks recorded exclusively in The Owl Room, including three songs from the first Sessions at the Owl Room recording session. AUXILIARY HOUSE REUNITES!

Trekky Records' mammoth gothic folk collective supergroup, Auxiliary House, went on hiatus in March of 2008 after a killer show with Fleet Foxes and Blitzen Trapper. Shortly before the break, the band recorded a song for the third installment in Pox World Empire's excellent Compulation series. Compulation Volume One featured songs from The Rosebuds, Des Ark, The Nein and Portastatic. Compulation Volume Two kept rolling with tracks from Work Clothes, Bellafea, David Karsten Daniels and The Kingsbury Manx. Now we have Compulation Volume Three featuring some of our favorite NC bands, including The Strugglers, Midtown Dickens, Un Deux Trois and our very own Aux House.

To celebrate the release of the comp, Auxiliary House has decided to wake up, shake off its furry coat and roar once again, reuniting for a single show at Local 506 on April 25. The show is the official release show for Compulation Volume Three and Midtown Dickens, Filthybird and Bull City will also be playing. Lucky for you the $8 admission price includes a free copy of the new compilation. Please enjoy the brand new song from Auxiliary House:

THE PHYSICS OF MEANING TAKE OVER CMJ

The Physics of Meaning joined the hundreds of bands rolling through New York City this past weekend for the annual CMJ Music Marathon. The festival can be treacherous, but this year it treated the Physics Boys very, very well. Here's some videos, photos and kind words.

KEXP, the wonderful radio station based in Seatlle, WA, asked Daniel and Co. to play a set live on the air during CMJ. If you weren't lucky enough to tune in to hear it live, KEXP was nice enough to film a video and make it their Video of the Week. Here's The Physics of Meaning performing "We Were Made for This World" off of their new album, Snake Charmer and Destiny at the Stroke of Midnight:

KEXP also conducted a very saucy interview with the band:

-Stereogum posted a nice photo of Daniel in their CMJ '08: It's a Photo Wrap.
-Gothamist, whose CMJ showcase The Physics of Meaning played, posted an interview with the band, conducted by members of Wild Sweet Orange.
-Free Williamsburg posted a few pictures and words about Physics' performance at the Forcefield PR Showcase at Pianos.
-RCRD LBL posted a nice little feature on "Aeroplanes and Hurricanes", the lead single off of Snake Charmer.

THE PHYSICS OF MEANING HAS A NEW ALBUM

The Physics of Meaning is Daniel Hart, member of St. Vincent and John Vanderslice's band. Daniel has written an amazing concept album called Snake Charmer and Destiny at the Stroke of Midnight that we will be releasing (with Daniel's own Bu Hanan Records) exactly 2 months from today. The album tells the story of a serpent who wants desperately to become a human being, set against a backdrop of magical forests, wishing wells, a king's army and the hypnotic melodies of the last real snake charmer on earth. The album was recorded by Mark Paulson (Bowerbirds, The Rosebuds) and features contributions from Annie Clark (St. Vincent), Adam Baker (Annuals) and members of Megafaun and Des Ark. ENDLESS MIC HAS A NEW MIXTAPE

Endless Mic and Trekky Records are proud to announce the release of The All New Super Exclusive Al Gore Bongwater Mixtape Volume One. The mixtape reflects some material the boys found time to record during their hectic schedules supporting their most recent release, Baby Geniuses. Written and recorded over the course of a month, much of the mixtape features first-take verses, spontaneously composed during late night recording sessions. Listeners may recognize re-imaginings of beats from the likes of Daft Punk, Missy Elliot, Pink Floyd, 50 Cent, and others. Al Gore Bongwater Club also includes contributions from Geechi Suede of Camp Lo and FreeBass 808 (AKA the Apple Juice Kid), on a remix of "Brother" by Endless Mic's hometown friends Annuals.

The mixtape, as a musical format, has always been a liberating medium, freeing up artists from the constructs of standard LPs. The format is also a way to reach listeners and fans more directly. For that reason, The All New Super Exclusive Al Gore Bongwater Club Mixtape Volume One is available for download right now, for free.

TREKKY RECORDS ENDORSES BARACK OBAMA

Obama meets with Trekky Management in the meadow behind their house in Chapel Hill, NC

After months of intense deliberation, and visits from presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards and (Google) Ron Paul, Trekky Records has decided to endorse Senator Barack Hussein Obama for President of the USA. The much sought after Trekky endorsement generally ripples out into a 3 or 4 point jump in the polls, so we hope to see Obama's numbers increase in the coming weeks.

Endless Mic to release Baby Geniuses 08.21.07!

Watching Your World

Trekky Records' resident rappers will release their follow up to 2005's Cave Livin' on 08.21.07. In their second full-length release from Chapel Hill's Trekky Records, Endless Mic's Baby Geniuses establishes a new standard and sound for North Carolina hip hop music as well as unleashes artists who (get this) actually enjoy hip hop. These babies are growing up, and they believe in "Rap for Rap’s Sake".

Devoid of self-righteous jabs at the mainstream and lackluster yearnings for Golden Age boom-bappery, Endless Mic fashions a truly unique creation, at once innovative and accessible, that refuses to follow the precedent set by independent or mainstream rap albums. Baby Geniuses is packed with satire. Notice the tounge placed firmly in cheek as cliche rap-isms are recontextualized into the jokes they truly are ("Is he the illest on the mic since Big passed away?"). Endless Mic also deconstruct the rapper-as-demigod function, insisting that just because they are better rappers, doesn’t mean they are more important than you ("You can stay at Endless Mic’s House").

Watching Your World

If you can't wait til late August to get your paws on new music from Endless Mic, we understand. So to preempt the release of Baby Geniuses, we have the Watching Your World EP, a digital only release featuring two songs from Baby Geniuses as well as a B-Side that doesn't appear on the record. The EP will be released 06.24.07 and avalable for your downloading ease at iTunes, Emusic and everywhere else you download. You can also get it straight from us through the download program in the Trekky Records Online Store.

Lost in the Trees: Time Taunts Me EP out today!

Ari Picker of The Never brings us a new EP, released under the name Lost in the Trees. Lost in the Trees has always served as an outlet for the less accessible side of Ari's songwriting: an outlet for his film score arrangements and sample-heavy, dark folk songs that didn't really work for The Never. Now, with a 9-piece backing orchestra, Lost in the Trees sees its newest evolution. Finally Ari has the musicians to fill out his elaborate compositions. The result is Time Taunts Me, 7 songs representing Ari's finest work, fleshed out by his symphonic orchestra. The EP is out today, March 20, and you can find it in stores everywhere. If your store doesn't have it, ask them to order it! If you prefer to order online please visit our Online Store.

"Big and orchestral blend with intimate and folksy to create a compelling and vaguely menacing landscape — like dark thunder clouds rolling over meticulous fields of wheat."

Endless Mic is busy opening for the best hip hop acts in the country. They continue work on their follow-up to Cave Livin', which will be due out in the Fall of 2006. New Endless Mic merch is on the way and will be available in the Trekky Records Online Store.

Mortar and Pestle is back in action, writing new music and playing a few well-placed shows. If you don't have Oak in the Acorn yet, order it right now!

The Never are fulfilling their role as the hardest working band in North Carolina, touring endlessly. If you live on the east coast, they WILL play near you. We told them not to play so much, but they were just so excited to promote their new book and album, Antarctica, they couldn't help themselves. The main leg of the Summer tour is beginning June 15th and will feature the full lineup of The Never, as well as a small string orchestra to help them pull off those grandiose string arrangements. The band will also be traveling in a converted church bus that runs on vegetable oil. If you don't know much about biofuel, check out Biodiesel.org. It's cheaper and better for our environment! Also, new merch is coming! We've got two new shirts and a wealth of buttons and stickers. You can't wait! Antarctica will be nationally released on July 25th, but you can order it now from the Trekky Records Online Store for a discounted price!

Various things:
Thanks to everyone who came out last night to help us sell out the ArtsCenter. It was our best CD release to date. (Maybe cause there was a book too?) If you're not in North Carolina, be sure to watch the shows page for The Never coming to your town. They'll be touring heavily in preparation for the national release of Antarctica. Get your copy now and you can tell all your friends you had it months before it blew up! You can now order it in the online store now. Shirts will be up there soon!

In Endless Mic news, the group will be contributing their unreleased song, "Down", to the latest of the always stellar WUAG Greensboro Compilations. There will be an amazing CD Release party on April 29th in Greensboro with like, literally all of our favorite bands. Antarctica Tickets

We are nearing the local release of The Never's mammoth multimedia project, Antarctica, and a lot is going on. In case you don't know, Antarctica is not only the latest album from The Never, but also a fully illustrated, 50 page storybook. Both the album and the book follow the same story of a country boy on a journey to the city to return a nuclear bomb. You have to see it to believe it. In any case, don't miss the Antarctica Release Show on Sunday, March 26th at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, North Carolina. The band will be playing the album in its entirety and you'll get a massive portion of the art used from the book as well. It'll be quite an experience...

To ensure that you get a chance to see this show, reserve tickets! Read the policy carefully and you can reserve up to 5 tickets for the show. We expect to sell out, given the response so far, so please act early because this show won't happen again.

Lots of little things:
-Endless Mic welcomes new member! Endless Mic just released their Trekky debut, Cave Livin', but don't expect them to just relax now. While also playing shows to support their current album, the guys are hard at work on their next album, with new producer and fellow Greensboro resident Deez joining the group on production. Trekky is honored to welcome Deez to Endless Mic and the Trekky Mafia.

-Songs from Antarctica finally available! That's right, we are finally revealing a couple of the songs from The Never's upcoming music/art/book project, Antarctica. They are most easily available on The Never's MySpace page. We will be successively releasing more and more samples of the album, so check back here for updates on that as well as other news on Antarctica.

-Trekky Radio Updated! The Trekky Radio playlist has been mixed up and updated, with new songs from current and upcoming releases as well as some of this season's past exclusive downloads. Just click the Trekky Radio icon on the top of the page to launch it.

Trekky Records is proud to officially announce the upcoming release of Artless Yet Excellent
the long awaited second album from Vibrant Green.

Recorded over two years ago with John Plymale (Superchunk, Portastatic, Two Dollar Pistols) at Overdub Lane, Artless Yet Excellent is the realization of potential. Vibrant Green began as three brothers, mere teenagers, playing cover songs in their small house in coastal North Carolina. The product, after years of writing and recording, and a significant hiatus, is the fully grown skill of a songwriter (Stephen Tunnell) and the harmony and dynamic of a band that is seemingly strengthened by the bond of brotherhood. There are rock songs, there are acoustic songs. This is the modern rock album: distinct and familiar. It is what you have been waiting for. Vibrant Green is back.

A new batch of shows are posted (with more to come) and you really should go to all of them. At least put them all on your calendar:

The Never at the Shakori Hills Music Festival with over 40 bands, including Tift Merritt, the Avett Brothers, and Two Dollar Pistols. You can even camp out for all four days of the event and hear not only the Never but a lot of great bluegrass. Bobby Britt is notorious for popping up somewhere at Shakori Hills, so watch out.

Mortar and Pestle at the Corndale House in Greensboro with Dig Shovel Dig, and RC Pro Am on October 14th. It's a house show y'all.

Alvarez Painting at the Nightlight with Sentai, a new band featuring ex-members of Black Eyes (Dischord Records). Apparently they are known for playing a pretty wild show somehow involving lots of lights. Find out what that could mean on October 29th.

Also, Jessie Ainslie (Straight No Chaser) will be playing with Castanets at the Athsmatic Kitty CMJ Showcase in New York City. Check out his current project, Friends Band. Speaking of CMJ Showcases, the fellows at Hello Sir Records will have one this year on Sptember 15 at the 169 Bar in NYC, so if you're in New York, check that out as well.

09.03.05
You all must be aware of the very current tragedy in Louisiana. People are continually dying and few seem to be helping. Please donate here to the Red Cross. Any amount can help. Do it now because it will soon be too late. It is much more important right now than any other use of your money. If you are thinking about ordering something from Trekky, don't. Donate the money right away.

08.12.05

Just another reminder. Remember to dress nicely.

08.05.05
