Joe Norkus cut his teeth early playing in such high school bands
Westfalia and Straight No Chaser. Joe moved to Greensboro to attend
college in the fall of 2002 and formed the band Mortar and Pestle with
former bandmate Josh Kimbrough. Joe’s role in his previous bands was
primarily that of accompaniment, so he began to write and record his own
songs on a four-track in his bedroom. Joe quickly hit a
stride in his songwriting and began to see it as his primary musical outlet. In the spring of 2006, he called upon the help
of old Straight No Chaser bandmate John Neville and newcomer Andi Baker
on drums and bass, respectively, thus forming Embarrassing Fruits.
Thriving in the intimate informality of the Greensboro house show circuit,
the Fruits are one of those bands that belong to the people. Inspired by stubbornly independent
bands like Pavement and Archers of Loaf, Embarrassing Fruits are not trying to be rock stars. Playing basements
as well as rock clubs is no problem for the Fruits...in fact they prefer it.
The First Time EP is a 5-song CD recorded by Embarrassing Fruits in
The Owl Room Studio in Trekky House. The packaging is a a 3-color screen printed digipak made by the band itself.
First Time
Sumr Stupid Drunk Fun is
the first release from Embarrassing Fruits. A self-released split with Blank Blank, the album features four songs from each Greensboro based band.
The title says it all.
